<text>Message from Mayor Redekop
I want to say a big thank you for the abundance of good deeds that have taken place in Fort Erie since COVID-19 began.

To all those who are doing their part during this stressful time by physical distancing, practicing proper hygiene, and self-isolating when required; to each person who has lent a helping hand to a neighbour, a non-profit organization or a business; and to all the frontline health care professionals, first responders, municipal workers, and those required to serve us while placing themselves in harm’s way each and every day, I want to express my and Council’s deep appreciation for all you do and all you have done for our community. It is the selfless generosity of so many that makes Fort Erie such a wonderful place for all of us to live and raise our families.

Thank you, Fort Erie, for doing your part during this extraordinary crisis and for listening to the advice from health professionals. Through these steps, we will be able to overcome this pandemic and be stronger for the experience. In the meantime, Stay Home, Stay Safe and Stay Well.

Fort Erie Boat Ramps Reopen
Boat ramps in the Town of Fort Erie were reopened to the public on Saturday, May 16. Anyone who chooses to use the boat ramps should follow the best practices to limit the spread of COVID-19 as outlined by public health professionals. Day passes can be purchased onsite at the Crystal Beach Waterfront Park Boat Ramp for $10. Season passes are not available at this time.

Restrictions on Outdoor Spaces in Fort Erie
As the Niagara Region cautiously moves forward to recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic, some restrictions are being lifted while others are staying in place in the Town of Fort Erie. For example, organized sports are still restricted on municipal fields, given their necessity for gathering of groups. Parks are open for passive use only. Playgrounds and their equipment, benches, washrooms, sport courts, and beaches remain closed at this time. We ask the public to continue being patient as staff work on plans to safely reopen park amenities and beaches.

Open Air Burning in Fort Erie
The Fort Erie Fire Department proactively manages outdoor fires through its Open Air Burning bylaw. This bylaw includes container type, size, location, weather conditions, acceptable materials to burn, requires supervision, suppression devices and more. The Town does not currently have a burning ban in place. To learn more, visit www.forterie.ca.

Fort Erie Virtual Market
On Thursday, May 14, the Town of Fort Erie hosted a virtual pop- up market on Instagram Live with Digital Main Street. This was a great way to support small businesses as well as get involved in the online marketplace, allowing for residents to get to know a little bit about different businesses as well as the opportunity to win prizes. A big thank you to all the businesses who participated in this great initiative.

Updates to Regional Landfill Operations
Niagara Region’s landfill and drop-off depot sites are now fully operational; however, residents are still encouraged to only use the sites if necessary. Niagara Region warns residents that longer than usual wait times should be expected as changes have been implemented to ensure physical distancing on drop-off pads. <text>FORT ERIE (May 22, 2020) Keeping in line with guidelines from the Province, some outdoor recreational amenities will be reopened over this upcoming week in the Town of Fort Erie.

Specifically, residents will be able to use parks and outdoor sports fields for more than walk-through uses, with some limitations. Residents must still abide by restrictions limiting groups to no more than five people and maintaining a two metre physical separation. Passive activities will now be permitted in these areas including:
Bringing a chair or blanket to relax in parks
Kicking a ball, playing catch, flying a kite and other such activities with members of their own households
Individual activities such as yoga or exercising, provided they are not in a group or class
New signage will be put up in these areas to advise of the safety measures that are put in place. In addition, staff will begin removing yellow caution tape from park benches and returning picnic tables to green spaces. Fort Erie residents are asked to remain patient as Staff implement these changes over the next week and prepare for the safe use of these outdoor recreational areas and amenities.

In addition to easing certain restrictions some previously closed amenities are opening for use. These amenities are:
Leash-free dog parks
Skate parks
Tennis courts
Multi-use courts
Those planning to utilize municipal green space to have picnics, sit on benches and picnic tables, or use various recreational amenities, are strongly encouraged to ensure preventive measures, as outlined by the Niagara Region Public Health Department, are followed at all times.

The following areas are not open at this time under the Province’s regulations:
Playgrounds, structures, and equipment
Spray pads
Public swimming pools
Public washrooms

<text>FORT ERIE (May 22, 2020) The Town of Fort Erie is currently working through the development and implementation of a recovery plan to guide the municipality through the process of recovering from the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Province has provided information and expanded frameworks for reopening Ontario after COVID-19. The easing of public health measures related to COVID-19 restrictions will be phased in over time and will vary by sector.

As part of the recovery planning process, the Town’s Emergency Operations Group has put together three groups to focus on developing procedures for opening town facilities; returning outside workers; and returning inside workers.

The recovery process is an opportunity to become a more resilient community and therefore must be strategically planned to maintain a balance needed to support the economy while protecting the health of staff and the public. It is unclear how long restrictions resulting from COVID-19 will be continued or terminated.

<text>FORT ERIE (June 9, 2020) In order to help reduce the spread of COVID-19 in Fort Erie, Bay Beach (also known as Crystal Beach) will remain closed to anyone without a Fort Erie resident season pass.

“The decision to keep Bay Beach closed to visitors was a tough one but we believe that it was the right choice for Fort Erie. We are a small town with limited resources. It’s important that we put the proper restrictions in place to ensure we can manage the beach according to the new health and safety guidelines put forth by the Province. We will happily welcome back our visitors as soon as we feel it's safe for everyone to enjoy,” said Tom Kuchyt, Chief Administrative Officer.

Resident season passes for Bay Beach are being offered to Fort Erie residents, Fort Erie taxpayers and Fort Erie short-term rental operators with proof of address such as a driver's license, passport, tax bill or any bill that shows the person’s name and address.

The fee for obtaining a Bay Beach resident season pass has been waived for 2020. Passes and day passes will not be available on-site (at Bay Beach) for health and safety reasons. Resident season passes will be made available for pick-up at the Leisureplex and Crystal Ridge arenas during select dates and times. The resident season pass pick-up schedule as well as start date and hours of operations for Bay Beach will be available later this week.

A maximum of 2,000 people will be allowed entry to Bay Beach per day (with no exceptions) to ensure physical distancing measures can be practiced.

Visit www.baybeach.forterie.ca for additional information about temporary changes to Bay Beach operations or to learn how to obtain a 2020 resident season pass for Bay Beach.</text>

<text>Statement from Niagara’s 12 Mayors and Regional Chair on moving to Stage 2
Niagara’s 12 Mayors and Regional Chair offered the following statement regarding the announcement of the region moving into phase 2:
“This afternoon the Premier of Ontario announced that Niagara would be moving to Stage 2 as of this Friday at 12:01 a.m. This means many businesses and public facilities may begin to reopen, but incorporating measures to prevent the spread of infection.
This announcement means that COVID-19 in Niagara has been slowed to the point where some normal activities may resume, with the assurance that we continue to take steps to limit the spread of the virus. The decision to move Niagara into Stage 2 was made by the province based on local data around COVID-19, and included a consultation with our Medical Officer of Health.
We are pleased to see this announcement and look forward to our economy safely reopening so people can get back to work without overwhelming our health care system.
Thank you, Niagara
We want to thank everyone for their tireless efforts to combat COVID-19. It is your commitment that is allowing us to reopen our community and economy.
We know how frustrating, isolating and challenging it has been to miss your friends and loved ones. We know how hard it has been to miss a steady paycheque and to postpone or even cancel major life events.
We thank our businesses making many sacrifices and we want them to know that we are looking at all options to support them through the recovery.
We also want to thank our front-line heath care workers, Public Health professionals and essential workers. You kept us safe, fed and informed during this challenging time.

Taking the Next Steps Together
As we move into Stage 2, we want you to remember to support your local businesses. Spending your hard earned dollars at a local retailer, restaurant or attraction will make a difference as we move forward.

While the threat of COVID-19 has not disappeared, you are encouraged to resume some normal activities should you feel safe to do so. Businesses across Niagara have spent the last several months preparing and they are doing everything possible to ensure their operations are as safe as possible.

It is important to remember that while there is no way to avoid all risks, you can take steps to be safer. Remember to maintain physical distancing, wash your hands frequently, avoid touching your face and remember to wear a face covering when keeping a two-metre distance is not possible. Continue to stay home if you are not feeling well and get tested should you feel it is appropriate for you.

We are starting to take steps to find our new normal and this means we cannot let our guard down. We all must work together to support each other and keep each other safe.

Remember to do your part to stay safe, Niagara. We still have a long way to go, but we are confident we will make it together.”</text>
