II Elizabeth BENNER
Daughter of Phillip & Elizabeth BENNER
\

Elizabeth, her mother's namesake, was more often called Betsy. She married Peter ANGER and,
by so doing, linked the BENNERs with another Loyalist family who pioneered in the settling of
Bertie Twp. following the American Revolution. Peter was the son of Simon Frederick ANGER
,

·

l Jr. and Mary Magdalen WINDECKER, the I.3th child in

a

family of 14 children. Peter's

grandfather, Frederick ANGER Sr., born in Germany, had come to America and settled in the
Susquehanna Valley. Loyal to the crown, he and son Frederick Jr. fought with Butler's Rangers.

For their loyalty, Frederick Sr. and his family were given large grants of land in Bertie Twp. Of

the 400 acres given to Frederick Jr., 200 acres were Lots 1 of Concessions 10 and 11 from

Niagara River. All of the early ANGERs of Bertie and Humberstone Twps. were descendants of
Frederick ANGER Sr. The name also appeared as ANGOR and ANKER. They were mainly
farmers and blacksmiths.
Elizabeth was only the first of many BENNERs to marry into the ANGER family. Two

of her brothers, Philip Jr. and John Philip, each married a Sarah ANGE R , undoubtedly related to
Peter. Since he had 8 brothers,. most of them older

than he, the women could very well have

been his nieces.
In the census of 1851 Peter
acres on part of Lot 2, Con.

and Elizabeth and children were living in a log house on 33

11 Bertie Twp. Peter was listed as a laboure r and a member of the

Church of England. On a survey map of 1859, Elizabeth was a widow owning 15 acres of land.·
In 1874 she signed a quit claim to John N. ANGER for $15 for 16 acres in the south west
comer of Lot 2, Con. 11. This could imply that the original 33 acres was not owned outright, but
subject to ANGER family inheritance. (Registered Apr. 1, 1876-#2692 We lland Land
Registry)
By 1861 Elizabeth and her two daughters,

Nancy and Sophia, were living with her

parents, Philip and Elizabeth BENNER. Her widowed sister, Catharine CREGAR, had moved
home with her children some years earlie r. The parental roof sheltered them all in their time of

dead and Elizabeth and daughter Nancy were living alone with a
year-old William. This might have been Philip Henry's first child William, visiting his
need. By 1871 the parents were

grandmother.
The last entry we found for Elizabeth was in 1881 when she was living in Humberstone
Twp. with her daughter Sophia and husband Henry SCHA1ZLINE, and family. She was buried
in the Beach-Lutheran cemetery beside her son Philip Henry, but there are no dates for her in the
cemetery records.
