<text>WILLOUGHBY::: from Historical Writings of Willoughby.
The early settlers realized the importance of education in
establishing foundatipns for the developing of a new
aommunity. In Willoughby the first.school was formed and
classes held in the Riverside Church. the first centre of
worship built in 1824. Following the large immigration in
the 1830's the nead for more schools became apparent. ~he
Township was devided into seven sections. for school purposes
and a log school was built at the centre of each sectfeu.
Sections one and two served the Niagara River front area.
S.chool number three was to become what 1s now fhng George the V.
School in Chipp&wa. Schools four and five were on the Sodom Rd.
School number six served the southwest corner of the Township
loc.ated at the corner of Dell and Sauer 1 s Church Rd~. This was
known as the Rob Dell School.Section no. seven covered the northwest portion of t.he Township , around the school which was located at the corner of what is now Beck and Lyon's Creek Rds.
The schools , althaggh very rough and with conveniences
almost none existent, served for many years. Replacements to
the schools started in 1868.
Following page gives the dates that each of the original
schools was replaced.
