A history of the Ridgeway-Crystal Beach High School
By 1919, High School work had been going on in Ridgeway
for eleven years.

Students attended the Continuation School in

what is now the Masonic Building where they were taught by two
teachers.
In 1921 classes were moved to a new public school building, now Ridgeway Public School, which was built for approximately
$128,000.

In 1925, two rooms were added to this building and by

1926 there were four teachers on staff.
In 1927 the School Trustees applied to the Township of
Bertie for $132,000 for the purpose of erecting and furnishing a
new Continuation School building.

•

This building, now known as the

Ridgeway-Crystal Beach High School, is still in use today •
A cafeteria, which has since been enlarged, was build in
1956.

In 1960 an addition which included administrative offices,

industrial arts and home economics rooms, a library, and more
classrooms was built on the north side of the building.

In 1966

science laboratories and mere classrooms were added and a new
physical education wing was built.
In 1973 an addition was built on to the south end of the
building.

This wing included classrooms for the teaching of typing

and accounting and a new library.

The old library became a science

laboratory while the old typing room was used to enlarge administrative and guidance offices.
From its inception in 1909 with two teachers and approximately twenty-eight students, the present Ridgeway-Crystal Beach
High School has grown to a staff of thirty-one and a student enrolment of 537.
