The Executors and Trustees of the Estate, who were responsible for the planning and construction of the Hospital and sub.. sequently for its operation, decided at the outset that this memorial to Dr. Douglas should be distinctly Canadian in its architecture and construction. They, therefore, selected Mr. William Lyon Somerville, A.R.C.A., of Toronto, to design and supervise the construction in keeping with the conception of Dr. Douglas. Actual erection was begun in August, 1930.
