George Rainsford & his wife Anna came to the village in 1836.

•

They

applied for a lot on the Military reserve: the strip of land running

along

the river. Margaret Rainsford purchased village lot #4 from Thomas

Cook in 1835.
William Rainsford son of George and Anna claims that he purchased the
claim of Wm. Smith to village lot #1: 1/4 acre, between the lots of S. Hoyt
& Alexander Douglas. In his petitions he mentions that he had erected upon

these lands a home a store and a work shop.He was a merchant and Postmaster
in the village and he and his wife Elizabeth had six children.
Also from his letters it states that W.A. Thompson (thomson) a large
land owner who had came over from Buffalo and had started the railroad in
town, desided to take over a large part of the village lands for his farm.
This included the lot of W. Rainsford and all his dwellings situated upon
it. Beginning in 1851 a concerned effort was made through the government

channels by William

to stop the plans of Mr. Thompson .

He prevailed for the lands were in turn passed on to his son

VVM~or.

and eventually to Henrietta rainsford, who on her death willed. her estate
to Miss MacDonald .
