The land o,j1which this old home stands was deeded to William Powell

in 1796 . Fsb . 10 . 1832 Wm. Powell and Rebecca r is wife sold to John
Anderson the middle pt . 36 . 2. 23. acres for $ 1600 . There is some
question as to the date of this old home •
. The Anderson family lived first in the old Stanton home on tr1e N.E.
Cr. of the Niagara Blvd. and Bertie St.( from records of relative
Winifred Willis St. Catharines) In the records of St. Paul's Church it
mentions that many were lost at the time of the fire at the home of
Rev . John Anderson .
Ref . Records of W. Willis: re . Buffalo Mar . 31st. 1836 . 11 A list of 18
names and contributions::: n Deeply sympathizing with Rev . John Anderson
in his late misfortune: led by William Shel tot> Buffalo clergyman.
Quote from Emily Anderson ' s obituary:::
.The Grange Farm::: con .1, lot 9 . Bertie Township Welland County .
11 As described in 1886,
for insurance purposes:::
A building , two story wood house: 30 by 40 ft . with kitchen attached
at the rear, 22X 24 ft . and 20 by 20· ft . A long tree lined drive way lend
to the house at one time. 11
Helen( Yule)Anderson l ived here in the 1860's and descendants do
not recall it being out of the fawily till sold when Mrs. c. Ritchie and
her neices Helen J. and Emily moved to 18 Eastborne Ave. Toronto.
above __ inf . from the records of W. Willis
great- grandaughter of Rev. Johm Anderson.
In July of 1922 when Frank Bardol bought the estate from the executors
of Wm. Anderson it stated that the home was built some 90 years ago, or
1832 . This would compare vlith the date William Powell and wife sold the
land to John Anderson. This was called the middle part of the property:
36.2.23 acres .
No doubt after the fire in 1836 the house was greatly restored .
Again in 1846 John Anderson was sold the north part of the property
by the executor John Rusell •

About the year 1 ~ 51 and H'352 the late James Haggart started a Ferry
between Freebury's landing at the foot of Bowen Rd. to Hertel Ave .
at Black Rock on the American side. His fine little side wheeler
steamer the "Cygnet" , under her captain Dick Taylor, was placed on
the route, but only operated during the summer months.
After a trail of two possibly three seasons, the service was
discontinued ; possibly for want of suffic tent patronage . Another
gentleman by the name of James Haggart, who at the time was Capt. o 1
the Fort Erie Ferry bGat , and afterwards conductor of tre
Dummy
over the Internatilioaal Bridge; said he ran the Ferry for one seasor
Clustered around the foot of Bowen Rd.at the time was a grain
warehouse, blacksmith shop, shoe shop, dance hall , and two hotels .
One of the hotels was kept by a man named Freebury, and following h j
Joseph Stevens, and the last was Joseph Lanigan , who had a licence
1 ~ 75. A considerable business was done in ferry ing people and g oods
over the river, in small boats and yawls. There was a custom's offi c
stationed there, and on the dock was a Customs house, andalso the
shingle mill of Messrs. S~ockdale and Tait. It was at this dock th9. t
the Fenians landed on a fine morning of June l e 66. The shingle mtll
was not burned, but was torn down after the raids. ( O"Neil of cours
did not damage the hotels) All the buildings have disappeared, howev
remains of the old dock can still be seen.
It was at this point that the old Western Union Te legraph C
ins talled their first submarian teleg raph cable. It was abandoned wt
the International Bridge was completed, and the cable ran over it ."
Shortly after the F enian raids Joseph Stevens left the Hotel ,
and purchased a farm on the Gilmore road lot 5 cci~. 5 the west half .
