HOME::: # 89 N.S . of Bertie St. purchased 1880, lot 16. lot 3 in ist con.
home could have been on lot when purchsed
perhaps from the 1870's .

This very old frame home on the north side of Bertie, just up from the er. of
Stanton was probably built in

the late seventies prior to the Mercier

purchses date. It had four bedrooms upstairs and a one story kitchen added to the
back costomary of the time.In the yard to the west was the summer kitchen, that
was reached through the rose arbor.It had a two story veranda on the front, AND

a picKet

fence running all around.Across the steet by the corner of High the

Merciers had a garden, and
etc.

Emily Mc::rcier was , fror'n the Ray family that lived on the west side of

Stanton between Bertie andd Murray.She was born Oct.5th

1IB56, and when twenty

years of age she married John Mercier, in Buffalo !J.Y ., Nov. 18th, 1875.They
moved into the hom2 on Bertie St., and after the death of her husband, she lived
there till 1935.She became ill and movea in with her daughter Mrs. William Nicks
at 183 Bertie"'. ;}:.,v:h ere she st9-yed fro five and a half years.She died in the Fort
Erie hospital July 12th . 1940: 84 years of age.
The Merciers had five children one boy and five girls.:::

After the death of Emily Mercier the homestead went to Mrs. George Kiehl.She
never lived in the old homestead but rented itout. it was considerably remodelled with the addition of a full basement.The veranda was removed, the surmner
kitchen was taken dmm, the back kitchen enlarged and the house converted to
double apartments.
To-day the house still boasts

it's Victorian windovJs to the front, but the old

&gt;,Jooden siding has been covered with insul-brick.
