it was in 1892 that N.Y. State closed all it's tracks, and betting
establishments. Mr. J.C. Howard of Buffalo, who 01~:ne0'. such a bet ting
business in the city, closed the place and took up residence in village
of Fort Erie. It was not long before he opened a new place of business
in a building on the east side of Niagara St. belonging to Ed. Hawkins.
Al.though the clergy and a number of the villagers objected, he did
a considerable business, witti many comming from the Welland area as
well
' as those from N.Y.state. He managed to stay within the law, and
although a preliminary trial came about over his "POOL HALL" he never
came to trial, and operated till almost the time the Fort Erie track
opened ••
The track on Gilmore Rd., one mile in ~ ength was built by
Messrs. Hood and Wm. German. They lost control of it, and it went to
the Fort Erie Jockey Club Feb. 21st., 1906. The company was composed
of Messrs. John Condon: D.A. Stewart: S. W. Adler: John Madigan: and
Lewis A. Cella.
On Mar. 21, 1906 the track was leased by the Highland Park
Club of Detroit; under George .M. Hendrie of Detroit, and Walter o.
Parmer of Nashville Tennessee. Again in 1906 it was ind~rporated as
the Niagara Racing Association.
With the opening of the Fort Erie Track, there was no thurther
need of the "Pool Hall" and the betting establishment folded. From then
on the buildiri.g was in continous use. The front section of the place
was devided in tw9and a billiards room , or POOL HALL occupied the
section to the rear.
Tge front sections were often rented a s grocery stores and
lunch rooms.
