John Atwood came to Victoria in 1890, on Oct. 1st.
He opened a Grocery store on the. n.s. of Jarvis St. in a block

owned by Mr. Wector. It had an ice house in the.front and a
slaughter house behind. On Feb. 1st., 1891 he bought the undertaking business. In 1892 John built a store and a dwelling on
the north side-Â· . ~.f Dufferin &amp;.ti He operated the funeral business
from here also; and a large barn at the back was used to store
the large glass walled hears. He 0perated his busines on Dufferin
St. for forty years. In the .'aarly 401 s the buildings were burnt.
In 189,S_lle _t_ook over the furniture business, and in 1928 he
built his store on the south side of Jarvis st. In 1931 he built
a large brick home on~ the south side of .WE,;;:,temute where he lived
the remainder of:Â· his years. In the fall of 1940 :Mr. Atwood constructed an up to date funeral parlor and undertakin~. ~~)lsiness on
Wintermute St. by' hi;s\,home.
Mr. Atwood was Reeve of Bridgeburg from 1909- 1913.
He was a member of the Town council for 35 yrs. and was elected
21 consecutive times. In 1913 John Atwood was elected Warden of
Welland Council â€¢ In 1917 he was elected Bridgeburg's second Mayor.
