<text>FORT ERIE (May 22, 2020) Keeping in line with guidelines from the Province, some outdoor recreational amenities will be reopened over this upcoming week in the Town of Fort Erie.

Specifically, residents will be able to use parks and outdoor sports fields for more than walk-through uses, with some limitations. Residents must still abide by restrictions limiting groups to no more than five people and maintaining a two metre physical separation. Passive activities will now be permitted in these areas including:
Bringing a chair or blanket to relax in parks
Kicking a ball, playing catch, flying a kite and other such activities with members of their own households
Individual activities such as yoga or exercising, provided they are not in a group or class
New signage will be put up in these areas to advise of the safety measures that are put in place. In addition, staff will begin removing yellow caution tape from park benches and returning picnic tables to green spaces. Fort Erie residents are asked to remain patient as Staff implement these changes over the next week and prepare for the safe use of these outdoor recreational areas and amenities.

In addition to easing certain restrictions some previously closed amenities are opening for use. These amenities are:
Leash-free dog parks
Skate parks
Tennis courts
Multi-use courts
Those planning to utilize municipal green space to have picnics, sit on benches and picnic tables, or use various recreational amenities, are strongly encouraged to ensure preventive measures, as outlined by the Niagara Region Public Health Department, are followed at all times.

The following areas are not open at this time under the Province’s regulations:
Playgrounds, structures, and equipment
Spray pads
Public swimming pools
Public washrooms

              <text>Message from Mayor Redekop
I want to say a big thank you for the abundance of good deeds that have taken place in Fort Erie since COVID-19 began.

To all those who are doing their part during this stressful time by physical distancing, practicing proper hygiene, and self-isolating when required; to each person who has lent a helping hand to a neighbour, a non-profit organization or a business; and to all the frontline health care professionals, first responders, municipal workers, and those required to serve us while placing themselves in harm’s way each and every day, I want to express my and Council’s deep appreciation for all you do and all you have done for our community. It is the selfless generosity of so many that makes Fort Erie such a wonderful place for all of us to live and raise our families.

Thank you, Fort Erie, for doing your part during this extraordinary crisis and for listening to the advice from health professionals. Through these steps, we will be able to overcome this pandemic and be stronger for the experience. In the meantime, Stay Home, Stay Safe and Stay Well.

Fort Erie Boat Ramps Reopen
Boat ramps in the Town of Fort Erie were reopened to the public on Saturday, May 16. Anyone who chooses to use the boat ramps should follow the best practices to limit the spread of COVID-19 as outlined by public health professionals. Day passes can be purchased onsite at the Crystal Beach Waterfront Park Boat Ramp for $10. Season passes are not available at this time.

Restrictions on Outdoor Spaces in Fort Erie
As the Niagara Region cautiously moves forward to recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic, some restrictions are being lifted while others are staying in place in the Town of Fort Erie. For example, organized sports are still restricted on municipal fields, given their necessity for gathering of groups. Parks are open for passive use only. Playgrounds and their equipment, benches, washrooms, sport courts, and beaches remain closed at this time. We ask the public to continue being patient as staff work on plans to safely reopen park amenities and beaches.

Niagara COVID-19 Business Impact Survey
A Business Impact Survey has been developed to gauge the impact of COVID-19 on business operations. This survey will run until May 25 at 5pm. Visit www.niagaracanada.com for more information about this survey and other initiatives.

Open Air Burning in Fort Erie
The Fort Erie Fire Department proactively manages outdoor fires through its Open Air Burning bylaw. This bylaw includes container type, size, location, weather conditions, acceptable materials to burn, requires supervision, suppression devices and more. The Town does not currently have a burning ban in place. To learn more, visit www.forterie.ca.

Fort Erie Virtual Market
On Thursday, May 14, the Town of Fort Erie hosted a virtual pop- up market on Instagram Live with Digital Main Street. This was a great way to support small businesses as well as get involved in the online marketplace, allowing for residents to get to know a little bit about different businesses as well as the opportunity to win prizes. A big thank you to all the businesses who participated in this great initiative.

Updates to Regional Landfill Operations
Niagara Region’s landfill and drop-off depot sites are now fully operational; however, residents are still encouraged to only use the sites if necessary. Niagara Region warns residents that longer than usual wait times should be expected as changes have been implemented to ensure physical distancing on drop-off pads.
