About the year 1730 three brothers by the name of
Treichler emigrated f rom Germany to America.
One settled in Berks County , Pa. , another near
Pittsburg and the third near York, Pa.
Following is a brief history of the last mentioned
brother and his descendants.
It was about the year 1755, during the war between
British and French colonists , that this Treichler and his
son John, who was then about twelve years of age , were
employed to drive a team for the purpose of supplying the
soldiers with provisions. While thus
engaged the father
was tak en sick and his son immediately set of f with him
f or their home. They journeyed on f oot until the f ather's
strength became exhausted, when the son procuring a small
rowboat , proceeded to row his father on the river,
presumably the Susquehanna. But the sick man sank rapidly ,
and before they reached home , died in the boat. The
distress and grief of the poor boy can well be imagined.
He found three men , who helped him bury his fathr.
After this sad task was performed, he was obliged to f ind
his way home alone. After this, y oung John , with the
assistance of his mother and sisters, carried on the farm.
One sister was married to Martin Baer. They moved to
Waterloo, Ont. Another sister married a man by the name
of Lif e, and of the rest of the family we have no
knowledge.

Henry Treichler died when about twenty years of age
in York County, Pa. He was very pious , read many
religious works and it is said he sometimes prayed all
night. His mind and health became ef f ected and he died
of consumption. Before the close of his lif e he had yet
a great struggle to pass through before he could f ully
overcome the flesh and become reconciled to the will of
God. Just before he passed away he called his brothers
and sisters around him speaking to them thuswise: " Come
children , I see heaven opening unto me , "etc. and thus he
passed away in the f ull assurance of a glorious resurrection.
Mary Treichler was married about the year 1796 to
John Miller , who was born in York County , Pa. , Jan. 20 , 1760.
They moved to Canada in the year 1802 and settled near
Chippewa , Ont. , preferring to live under a monarchical
f orm of government. And they were ever loyal to the King.
Only once was their loyalty doubted.
It was\at the time
of the war between the British and the Americans in 1812.
Those were trying times to the inhabitants who dwelt on
the frontier , bordering the Niagara River , where battles
were f ought and British soldiers were liable to pass at
any time on their way to and f rom the dif f erent f orts.
A decree as issued that all those who were true and loyal
to the King should , as a sign of their loyalty, erect a
pole in f ront of their residences f rom which a silk hand
k erchief should f loat. All who did not comply strictly
to these orders were probably considered enemies.
One day
work came to the Miller f amily that the soldiers were
corning their way. So Aunt Mary Miller and Aunt Mollie
hastily hoisted a tablecloth. When the soldiers came along
instead of a silk handkerchief , they beheld f loating in
the breeze a tablecloth.
This provoked them , f or it was
not according to the orders , and they halted. to inquire
the meaning. Not being satisf ied with ex planations , they
seized Uncle Miller and took him along with them,
threatening to imprison him.
His plea was that he had
nothing to do with the matter , and said it was the women
who put out the tablecloth.
So they let him go.
Of
course, the women were innocent in their intentions.
Perhaps they thought the larger the f lag the better.
