pleased to inform you

(MG 30, D 32, Volume 26) contains

a typed manuscript entitled "Memorial of Fort Erie and Early Navigation on

â€¢

Lake Erie"

(181 pages)

1813 (21 pages).

as well as some typed notes entitled Niagara Frontier

The manuscript is a detailed history of Fort Erie 1761-1814

while the notes contain various pieces of information concerning the Detroit
frontier in 1813.

File 89a of the Cruikshank Papers (Ibid., Volume 32)

contains 26 newspaper clippings relating to the life and interests of
E. A. Cruikshank.

Some are historical articles written by Cruikshank.

I trust you will find this information helpful.
Xerox copies of any of the above documents may be obtained at
a cost of 10 cents per page with the exception of several of the newspaper
clippings which are too large for xeroxing.

piled by Mr. Ernest Green of Ottawa , a Past President of the Ontario
Historical Society, with the assistance, in the concludil1g part, of the SoÂ­
ciety's Secretary. It incorporates s ome passages pre vi ously published in

Ernest Alexander C ru i ksha n k was born in Bertie township, Welland
county, o n June 29, 1853, the son of Alexander Cruikshank of Peterhead,
and M a qï¿½ a re t Milne, also of Aberdeenshinï¿½. Scotland. After attending
St. Thomas Grammar School and Upper Canada College, from which he
graduated with hon ors , he devoted himself to the study of languag-es and
Wa8 engaged for some years in newspaper and magazine work in the
United States.' Returning to his birth-place he soon entered municipal
affairs and held various offices in Bertie township and Fort Erie village.
lï¿½e was reeve of the l a tte r for fifteen years, and was chosen warden of
Welland coun ty in 1886. Ile was also .a member of the Welland CouncilÂ·
during the period of county "commissioners".

in:ititute and general hospital boards.
In 1877 Erncilt Cruikshank was commis8ioned ensign in the 44th
"Wellarnl" battalion of volunteer inf an try and ro!'!e to the lieutenantÂ­
rolonelcy of the Linc o l n and Welland Hegiment in 1809. On compleli11gÂ­
his tenure of this appointment he wa8 mad e brigadier of the Gth Infantry
Brigade, and on many occasions had com m a n d of larger bodies of troops
during trainings in Military Dit;trict No. 2.
He was an ardent student of military science and o n e of his chosen
tactics and strategy of Ge1wrals Lee and Stonewall JackÂ·
