Dear Mr.

1956

Glenny:

We have j ust heard from John Bell of your
engagement to Miss Jessie S au nd e rs 1 and so I must just write
to congratulate you, and t o express in Eleanor's name, as
well as rey own, our good wishes to both of you.
Here we ar e in the midst of Christmas prepar
as everyone els e is. We have j ust finished getting off
Christmas cards, and a very lar ge mail comes in every day.

a t io n s,

For Christmas we shall ha ve a ver y o ld friend of Eleanor's
staying with u s. She is a t e a c he r in Toronto, and we have
kept touch with her through the years. Then a school friend
of Elspeth's who has moved to Ottawa will come for a few
days after Chrastmas. We are always g i v en a turkey from
a group of cou nt ry Presbyterians at Christmas time, so we
always invite some people to help us to eat it. Besides
t he family and our gu e s t we shall have a European Cathomic
wo man who is a . great f r ie nd 1 and a close link with some parts
of the French anadian world here. We have just asked also
a boy from near Ha.milt on who is alone in the world and is a
grad uat e student at Laval University in Science, and comJCes
to St • .Andrew's Church. When I called him up this mo rn i n g he
sounded so surprised and xpleased. We may a lso have the
principal of Joh n ' s school, who is a l s o alone in the world.
Elspeth will be 13 in January. She continues
.
to do well at s chool, and is get t ing tall, but we are all
slim in this f am i l y. She has just joined t h e school band,
and is learning to play the clarinet. She does u i te well
at the piano now.
John will be 10 in Fe br u ary. He has come
to li fe intellectually within the past year. He has always
been one to enjoy things, and now the Quest for knowledge
is one of his
literature.

enthusiasms,

particularly

in

history

and

We have had a very busy gear, but I can't
go on now. ,r best wishes to both of you for Christmas,
and in yo u r life together.
Yours

sincerely,
