JORN PALMER:

1772- 1819

John Palmer &gt;,vas an early trader, residing first in Fort Erie,
and later moving to Buffalo. He built a house there in 1795, and
a tavern (on the site of the Memorial Aud. ) that was know as
Palmer Inn.
Hi.s ::..st. wife was Caty, the c{augh ter of l,ewis Maybe. After
her death he maried her sister Mary, and returned with her to
the Maybe property tm the Ni~gara River road. He again opened an
Inn and the area became known as Palmer's Point. After his death
his wife continued to run the place, and it was known far and wide
as mother Palmer's.

Jo}:m Palmer who landed 11vith the refugees from the U.S.A. , came to
Canada with his four sor:Ls, Jahn Will:Lar:i Henry B.t Jacob, and his wife
Matilda Everett whom he married in Pennsylvania.
He was given a Grant of 100 acres from the Crown on the N.River.

Palmer house was located on the river road 1Jetween Millers Bay and
Blacl;;:. Creek .. It was a large buildii1g containing 35 lJedrooms. It was built

of soli~ logs obtained from the adjacent country, and surfaced with
stout clapboards. It had a large terrace or verandah upstairs, that
faced the river. It 1 s bar was famous for it's elderberry &amp; grape wines;
a Plamer product that it served exclusively. On the farm was a large
swamp called Palmer 1 s marsh, which was about 40 acres in exstent.
In 1812 General Drummond had his headquarters at Palmer House.
In 1813 the hostillery was the headquarters of the Canadian Militia.
The building was raised in 1885 â€¢
